Précurseur de Walt Disney, il est le premier film d'animation où un personnage non humain possède une personnalité. Lors d'une visite au muséum américain d'histoire naturelle, le bédéiste Winsor McCay parie qu'il peut faire revivre un dinosaure grâce à des dessins animés. Plus tard, donc, il organise une projection cinématographique. On passe alors des vues réelles au dessin animé et l'on voit le dessinateur armé d'un fouet. Il appelle l'animal qui surgit des rochers puis exécute une séance de dressage.
