Competition 1&2
Host: Serge Abiaad, La Distributrice de Films
We’re kicking off our first After Projection in full force with Jeremy Comte (Brute), Will Niava (Jazz Infernal), Jean-François Bouchard and Olivier Côté (La Retaguardia). United by shared affinities, their films explore art as a means of transcending one’s condition. Their protagonists grapple with doubt, self-questioning, and the transformations sparked by creative practice. Moving between creation, migration, and identity, these filmmakers examine art’s power to rise above the everyday.
In Jazz Infernal, led by the talented Ange Éric N’guessan Koffi, an Ivorian trumpeter newly arrived in Montreal searches for his own voice while reconnecting with the memory of his father, a jazz icon. In La Retaguardia, art becomes an anchor — a space of resistance and belonging — as four Cuban artists choose to remain in Cuba despite economic hardship and the constant pull of elsewhere. In Brute, an artist confronts his raw potential, pushing his medium to its limits before returning to its essence. The film reconciles creation and origin, inviting us to rethink the foundations of artistic practice.
Beyond the film itself, Jean-François Bouchard also created an exhibition and photo book inspired by his encounters with Cuban artists. Olivier, winner of the 2022 Cours écrire ton court (CÉTC) competition, has made his mark both in Quebec and internationally with L’abat and Les rois. This evening also marks our reunion with Jeremy, eight years after the release of Fauve, which came close to winning the Academy Award® for Best Live Action Short Film in 2019. By his side, we are honored to welcome, for the very first time, Ange Éric, who takes us on a journey from South Africa to Canada by playing the lead role in Will Niava’s latest film, which was acclaimed at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States, where it won the Jury Prize for Best International Short!
