Not all migrations can be traced on a map. Some borders are crossed with the body, others in more symbolic ways. This program explores these zones of passage where everything shifts, from familiar reference points to uncertain belonging. These are journeys in which movement becomes an act of survival, resistance, or rebirth. In Hudson Geese, the annual migration of geese becomes a lens through which we retrace the history of urbanization, revealing how the sky, once an open expanse, has gradually transformed into contested territory. Ulaan Monster follows a Canadian choreographer returning to Mongolia, navigating a migratory in-between: a space that is both physical and psychological, suspended between one’s culture of origin and host society. In Effacées, two women are forced into invisibility within a society that refuses to acknowledge them, a reality grounded in lived experience, where survival means remaining unseen. This tension resurfaces in Morgenkreis, where the weight of stereotypes and often-unspoken racism bears down on a father living in exile in Germany. Finally, in Patience (Sabali), brought to life by the duo Amadou & Mariam and remixed by DJ Snake, patience, love, and resilience are celebrated with a touch of bittersweet grace. Together, these films honour the strength of those who cross visible and invisible borders, tracing the upheavals between what we leave behind, what we carry with us, and who we become along the way.
* Screened as part of a double feature with the Memories program.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers of the films from the two programs, Memories and Migrations.
